De Zerbi Aims to Outdo Old Rival Gattuso as Brighton Takes on Marseille in Europa League Clash

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi is gearing up to face Gennaro Gattuso's Marseille in a crucial Europa League encounter, hoping to revive his team's campaign in the competition. The clash between the two Italians is not just a game; it's a meeting of old foes with a fiery history that dates back to 2016.

Their first encounter occurred during the Serie C playoff final when De Zerbi was managing Foggia, and Gattuso was in charge of Pisa. In a dramatic turn of events, Gattuso was struck by an object thrown from the stands and then clashed with De Zerbi, who suspected Gattuso of exaggerating the incident to waste time.

While there is mutual respect between the two managers leading up to their reunion at the Stade Vélodrome on Thursday night, De Zerbi couldn't resist taking a playful jab at his rival. "We both have passion – we live this work with our character," De Zerbi stated. "I have big respect for him, although I wouldn't say he is a friend. We are very close in terms of character and passion. But I think tomorrow will be better than in 2016."

De Zerbi also shared his thoughts on his team's recent struggles, including a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa. Despite facing adversity, he expressed confidence in his players and squad. Having rejected the opportunity to manage Marseille himself in the past, De Zerbi expects a strong response from his team in Marseille after three defeats in their last four matches.

Brighton's captain, Lewis Dunk, acknowledged the challenge of playing in a hostile environment in Marseille but emphasized the team's determination to secure a victory. He said, "We're expecting a hostile environment but there's hostile environments in England... We're coming here to win – it doesn't matter what is going on around the pitch."

Brighton has cautioned approximately 3,000 traveling supporters to be prepared for a potentially hostile atmosphere in Marseille and has warned them of potential fines from French police if they visit the Old Port area. Captain Lewis Dunk, who was sorely missed in Brighton's Europa League debut against AEK Athens, is ready to lead the team with immense pride.

As the stage is set for this highly anticipated clash, fans can look forward to an intense battle on the pitch and a rivalry reignited between De Zerbi and Gattuso.
